It's a question of familiarity. Randhir is right, IMHO. Most of you guys have run alsa for years, and know the ropes. I have run with OSS until now, and after the first time, all was easy. Alsa adds several steps to this process, and a number of gotchas. I have still to sort an alsa based sound system, and that sort of advice will be most helpful to me. BLFS _not_ unmuting the channels, or warning about the dummy device is crazy. Remember you have to support the second half of 'FBBG'. The book has to BE good, or thorough.
