Hi to everybody.

I've got a question about the use of a ADSL modem
connected via ethernet with the pc.

I'm a new LFS user. I've completed the installation of a system
following the instructions of book 6.1
At the end of the book, the author(s) suggests to continue with
the chroot environment with the installation of a few packages
in order to work in a much better position.
In particular the installation of PPP and Dhcpcd are suggested
if the user is not ok with static IP.

Here comes my question.
My ADSL modem does bring up the link without needing
any operation from the pc. That is, via a web interface I saved
into the modem the informations (username, password, ...)
required for the connection. I've got a ISP that doesn't account
me for the time that I am connected, so whenever I turn on the
pc it's ok for me to get connected.
My modem, as soon as it is connected to the phone line and receives
a signal from the network card of the pc, brings up the link
and acts as DHCP server and DNS server, and NAT. So my
windows box...
   - gosh, I had to name it.... blaah! :) -
... ehm, my box does not need any info. I told it to obtain from
the server the IP and the DNS.

Ok, ok - you say - so, where is the F.. question?!?

yes, reading the BLFS for info about PPP, RP-PPPoE, and
so on, I went into a 'adsl-setup' script and a bootscript that
tries to bring up the adsl link... my question is: DO I need them?

As to what I have installed and configured, up to this moment, in
my linux box, when I boot into linux (LFS 6.1) it says:
 - adsl-start [FAIL]
 - it sees eth0 (UP and RUNNING from ifconfig)
 - resolv.conf is empty
 - netstat -rn says there are no routes :(

Other info:
 I've installed libpcap, PPP, Net-tools, RP-PPPoE
 I've not (yet) installed Dhcpcd
I've compiled into the kernel (no modules at all) PPP and PPPoE

I have also to say that I used throughout all the book the user-package
hint, so I made most of the installation not as root, but as the package
user created for each package. I tried to double-check every file that
could be installed in a wrong way, it seems to me that this detail has not
to do with the problem I've got.

Ok, I've written much much much much a lot! I hope you will be so kind
to forgive me.

TIA
Luca
