Some success at last. Just as I thought it was just me & my frame of mind that wasted me several desperate hours. As you may remember, alsamixer run properly, but alsaconf didn't, same for supertux, totem and other higher-level apps. Hence I was certain it has to be a problem with kernel / alsa config. BUT I have just recalled there is a tiny lovely app shipped with alsa-utils, aplay. And guess what? It plays all wavs I feed it perfectly. Concluding - it's most probably related to my gstreamer configuration. Perhaps I'll recompile plugins, as I've just installed JACK & alsa-plugins? Going to give it a spin...

Supertux needs SDL_mixer to play sounds, it may also need smpeg. Did you
install SDL_mixer? It didn't occur to me that you would compile Totem with the
gstreamer backend. I compile it with the xine-lib backend. It works OK but not
as well as xine itself.
