Once it works properly, no. With 2.6, rebuilds after altering the .config are a lot more sensible, so a minimal change can be built much more quickly if the built tree is there. Also needed for out-of-tree modules, but if you don't have those at the moment it's probably wasteful to keep the tree around just in case.
