I don't know if it's the book, but I must have done something wrong somewhere along the way. I restored my backup of the previous Gnome install (it sure is handy to put the whole mess in one separate directory tree) and saw that I was using Evolution 2.4.0 with evolution-data-engine 1.4.0 the last time my address book worked. So I restored the 2.12.1 Gnome tree and installed those older versions of evolution-data-engine and Evolution... and the address book is still messed up. Can't imagine where I strayed, though. The whole GTK+/Gnome process is a consistent pattern of ./configure, make, make install . The book uses that `pkg-config --variable=prefix ORBit-2.0` method for locating Gnome and I prefer hard-coding the path in a pre-written configure script that I call each time, but other than that I think I'm installing everything exactly as the book recommends. And my configure script (which in turn calls ./configure with all the standard options) has worked fine up until this build. > Also, if there are some other tests that I can do, that apparently > fail for you, let me know. Did you specify any build options other than prefix in the configure for the app or the data engine? Thanks, -- Peter B.
