I don't know if it's the book, but I must have done something wrong
somewhere along the way. I restored my backup of the previous Gnome
install (it sure is handy to put the whole mess in one separate
directory tree) and saw that I was using Evolution 2.4.0 with
evolution-data-engine 1.4.0 the last time my address book worked. So I
restored the 2.12.1 Gnome tree and installed those older versions of
evolution-data-engine and Evolution... and the address book is still
messed up.

Can't imagine where I strayed, though. The whole GTK+/Gnome process is
a consistent pattern of ./configure, make, make install . The book uses
that `pkg-config --variable=prefix ORBit-2.0` method for locating Gnome
and I prefer hard-coding the path in a pre-written configure script that
I call each time, but other than that I think I'm installing everything
exactly as the book recommends. And my configure script (which in turn
calls ./configure with all the standard options) has worked fine up
until this build.

Did you run make check, and did it pass all tests? Did you specify any
build options other than prefix in the configure for the app or the data
engine?

Thanks,
