I use Xgl with my LFS empowered pc, had no real problems compiling it
except I use the latest beta NVIDIA drivers for some extensions needed,
however compiz works even under kde but it is not recomended.
A good starting point for Xgl is
http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software_2fXgl and by the way, if I
remember right there's a link in freedesktop page,
http://en.opensuse.org/Xgl.
You cannot start compiz from Xorg or XFree86 because it lacks the
absence of composite extension (enabling it in xorg.conf or XFree86-4 is
not recomended), but under Xgl works very well. Before trying Xgl take a
look to the supported video cards from
http://en.opensuse.org/Xgl#Hardware_Advisory, and
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_Video_Card_Support_Under_XGL.
If you're using NVIDIA, NVIDIA with Xgl disables by default some
extensions so you have to add to the device section of X configuration
file Option"AllowGLXWithComposite" "true".
Be warned that starting compiz with Kdm could lock your system, as it
happened to me the first time.

If interested I build even XCB/XCL, found on
http://xcb.freedesktop.org/wiki/

Bye,
Luca
