You said that you have a Radeon card? My laptop has a Radeon X700, and it would only run in 680x400. I'm not sure if the problem is identical because I don't usually have 680x400 in my xorg.conf, but if I set the default to anything higher, I got a blank screen. Occasionally it would crash but usually I had to switch to another terminal or even reboot. The solution was to add Option "MonitorLayout" "LVDS,AUTO" to the Section "Device" for the radeon driver. I think you can use NONE instead of AUTO.
