That's kind of what I'm thinking as well.

I recall seeing a page stating that Becker was complaining about the 
'strange design' of the 82557 after he saw the Intel driver source code 
and chip design docs when Intel finally released the stuff.

I guess I'll drop in a card and run iperf a few times to see what I get.
