I have no problem playing flv files downloaded from 

        http://tvnzondemand.co.nz/

or extracted from the mozilla cache after viewing on the youtube website

using either kaffeine 0.8.3  or  mplayer 1.0rc1try2-2.pm.2

the audio is always reported as MPEG Audio layer 3 by Kaffeine.
