Argh! Another swing and miss.  I assumed you committed a typo with 
"pycairo-1.10.0 is the python version of cairo" and meant py2cairo.  
Regardless, I've gotten py2cairo-1.10.0 to work.  I'm uncertain what I 
was doing wrong, but I'll take it.  Done deal.
