Hi Alan,

The caddy is also known as a hard drive enclosure, and you have to be
careful which you buy.

For example, there are currently two types of hard drives on the market.

The first kind is the 3.5 inch hard drives. These are the kinds that will
go into a regular desktop computer, and requires an external power supply to
run. Internals simply have a wire that will plug into the desktop's power
supply, and, if in an enclosure, the enclosure will have it's own power
adapter.

The other kind is the 2.5 inch hard drives which are most commonly used in
laptops or portable computers.

These hard drives are very small, about half the thickness of a 3.5 inch
drive, and does not need it's own power supply to run.

The enclosures for these hard drives will only come equipped with a USB
cable or other interface, and will not require a power adapter in order to
run.

These are obviously the most portable enclosures and hard drives, and are in
fact, often sold as accessories for laptops and the like.

Also, if the particular desktop or laptop computer's USB port does not have
enough power to run the drive, the USB cable will often come equipped with
an extra USB interface on the wire, so that the USB cable actually looks
like a Y. To get the extra power needed to run the drive on that particular
port, you would simply plug in the extra USB plug on the end of the Y-shaped
USB wire, and it will pull the extra power from the other plug.

Comes in handy when you're dealing with USB 1.1 ports and the like. Not so
handy when there's only one port available. Smile.

Anyway, hope this helps.

Victor
