Hi Mark, I noticed that you said that the laptop was about 3 years-old.
If this is the case, are you sure that the laptop has wireless capability? The reason I ask, is because laptops did not come with wireless capability as a standard until just a year ago or so. While now a days you would be hard pressed to find a laptop without wireless capability, even used, back then it wasn't so certain. I think you should make sure that her laptop is and has a wireless card installed on it, and then go from there. As Rick and David suggested, go with the wireless standard currently available, as the new one, particularly if you're running a 3 year-old laptop, may not support it.
