FWIW, I also convert them to lower bitrates before loading them onto my MP3 player (the Creative Zenstone seems fine as long as they're 64Kbps and up) so that I can fit more files onto it (around 270 currently on the 1Gb player).
Also, when you create .wav files using something like Cdex or Audacity, it's nice to be able to then convert them into .mp3 etc. Not specifically relevant, but anyway...
