Cathy,
I agree, both about memory and hard drive space. The more memory you can
get installed the better. My old laptop only had 512 of RAM, and the one I
have now has 2 gigs, which was the maximum I could get in this laptop at the
time. I can't even begin to tell you how much of a difference in
performance I notice, especially with JAWS and Kurzweil 1000. My antivirus
software seems to run better, too, and there isn't any sluggishness when I
try and perform other tasks when it is scanning my computer. Audio file
creation with Kurzweil is also a lot faster, and JAWS 6.0 also seemed to
perform better. I've also heard people say over and over that if you are
going to get Vista, you are better off with at least two gigs since Vista is
such a memory hog.

Your hard drive should also probably be good-sized. I have a 160 gig hard
drive which is enough only because a lot of our music is stored on an
external network drive. Additionally, I create a lot of audio files with
Kurzweil 1000 for use on CD's and my Victor Reader Stream (that I use in my
dreams). Although I put the audio recording quality to medium, some of
those files and folders (especially the folders containing books) can be
fairly large. A 250 page book for instance can be about 80 meg.
