Hi, Deb: If your daughter was able to close out the programs, then this means that the computer is actually able to function when revived from standby. I have had the experience of needing to let the computer sit for a minute or two when coming out of standby before I could get JAWS to function again. If you wait a minute or so and test to see whether there is sound (by going to the desktop with windows+m or trying to enter the start menu), and there is no sound, you can try restarting JAWS. If that doesn't work, then you will need to reboot. Unfortunately for you the best solution might be not to use standby whatsoever.
