Okay.  Now I feel really stupid.  It turned out that I had used 2 different 
kinds of criteria when labeling my files in the folder.  Some of them had the 
title spelled out:  e.I.g.h.t 
while others employed standard numeric characters: chapter 8.doc for example
But I owe it to David Ferrin who discovered the problem by looking at my file 
list himself.  Since both titles read the same, I had no idea that the problem 
existed.  That is definitely something a blind computer user should be aware 
of.  
 As soon as I corrected the file names using F2, editing the name and then 
pressing Enter, the file list returned to normal when I chose "Name"  as the 
option for sorting the icons.

Thank you all for trying to assist this bone head.  I guess the old saying is 
true.  "Two heads are better than one.  Even if one is a cabbage."
