David, Tom, et al: What is possible is to turn the DHCP off on your router and
specify a specific IP range. For example if you have four computers on your
network you can set the IP range from 192.168.1.101 to 192.167.1.105. This will
prevent the router from assigning IP addresses to computers. Any computer
connecting to that router will have to have a fixed IP address in that specific
range. However, this is not meant to be adequate security by any means. The
secure a wireless LAN you should use encryption in the form of either WEP or
WPA.

Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] router question

David,
I'm not an expert here, but my first router was wide open to the public
-- anyone who got within range.
I now have a newer Linksys router. For this one I have to enter a number
on the remote computer in order to access the wireless network.
Perhaps someone else knows more about this, but I don't think the IP
address makes a difference.
Blessings,
Tom
