Do you know what is on the page that you are scanning? Maybe there is a graphic on it. Have you tried scanning different hardcopies and gotten the same results?
Maybe you should type something up in MS-Word, or whatever is your word processor and print it out. Then scan it back in and see what kind of results you get. I use text Cloner Pro and have not had any problems with it, or my Cannon LiDE80 scanner.
