Hi Patricia,
Both of my externals are ones that I built with a kit, and they have power 
switches on them.
If you don't have a power switch on the external drive,
but it uses AC power, consider plugging it into a power strip
and then useing the switch on the power strip.
It's a good idea to have a habit of turning off devices that the computer 
will not.
This will help prevent leaving them on, which could be considered a fire 
hazard, when left unattended.
If the drive is powered by USB, then it should power off when the computer 
shuts down.
