Right Hannah. What I meant is this. If you use Stand By Mode, Jaws gets weird and sometimes doesn't come back correctly. Some laptops have another mode called "Sleep" which is supposed to keep the primary circuits alive while the rest of the machine is shut down. Okay, not a bad idea, right? Wrong! Sleep Mode and the complete shut down take just about as long to recover. Sometimes, especially with certain models, you lose focus or the system hangs up and you can't do anything. Maybe if you could see what was on the screen, it might be different. But for my money, I believe in keeping it simple, Hannah. That means if I'm not using my laptop, I move the cursor to "Turn Off" and press Enter. Today's laptops are so fast that it makes no difference at all in the recovery time. The other advantage is that it gives Jaws time to reacquire the screens.

Chris, that's an excellent idea. With a modern laptop, there's very little difference between the two. The Boot time is almost the same.

Think I'm going to have to encourage her to shut it down at night or when she's going out, rather than putting it to sleep. What do you all think?

I know that with a previous Laptop I had, it did that. That Laptop ended up breaking. I think it was because I used to let it sit there unattended too much. My best recommendation is, when you are not using your computer, turn it off. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Annette Carr" <amca...@verizon.net>

My Del laptop has started doing something similar to this. Sometimes after I have walked away from my laptop it will go to sleep, hibernate, stand-by or something. Most times when I return to my laptop all I need to do is hit the down arrow and press enter and I'm back in. There are other times when nothing will get it to come back on except for holding down the power button for at least 30 seconds or more. This has happened when working off both AC
and battery.

Hello all,
Has anyone heard of the below.
Hannah put her Vista laptop to sleep. When she woke it up the entire machine froze and she can't even power it off, despite holding it for more than five
seconds.
Never heard this before and it's quite worrying. I've just told her to let
it completely discharge.
Thanks in advance for any help regarding this.
