Thanks a lot Ishe for your explanations. i have suffered a lot from the
autoruns that prevent my drives from being opened pressing enter. At
times, i could fix the problem manually by removing the autorun, at
others, i just couldn't, i had to reformat my machine to get red of
them. Now i got a hold of a great small utility called autorunRemover
that blocks the spreading of autorun files during the excution of USB
drives. But the commands you told us here will be of great use if
something happened again to me or to those I know.
Thanks a lot again

Hi
You're welcome.
I'm sorry that I did not explain in my initial post what was taking
place.
The regsvr32 is just your system's server for all the DLLs. The DLL
files contain some code to be executed across applications. They do
not have main entry points such as the executables (.exe), so they
have to be called by running program.
Two interesting examples of code contained in DLL are the management
of Open and Save files and handling of SSL connections by some programs.
Unless a DLL file is registerd by the regsvr32, it cannot function.
In the case of the shell32.dll, it is the one that is responsible for
the smooth running of the main shell. Many programs make use of this
DLL--examples are the file managers (7zip File Manager comes to mind).
Some viruses may attack or corrupt your factory DLLs. This is so with
some rogue autorun.inf that execute some malicious apps. So we want to
correct the behaviour of our shell by reinstalling its DLLs.
In fact, there are some registry tweaks you can play with, but due to
the nature of this list where we have beginners, intermediate and
advanced computer users play along with each other, I tend to avoid
getting into these as they may compromise our machines.
Since the problem in question called for urgent response, it was safe
just to state the actions to be taken without giving so many
explanations.
Cheers,
Ishe

David and Ishe,
I also tried this and it worked. However I'm not clear how someone
would know that this needs to be done and what improvement will I get
from doing this.
This list is such a nice place to be. There is so much to learn and
lots of friendly people.

Allow me to do some research before answering you. Most likely
though the guy who posted these instructions in the first place will
be able to supply a reason before I can.

David,
This is interesting. I've never heard of this before. How
would one know they needed to perform this action?

HI David:
Here is a repeat of the message you wanted from Ishe.
Hi,
Sorry for the annoyance, but try this:
1. Go to Start menu, choose Run...
2. From the dialog box that appears, typeregsvr32 /i
shell32.dll
3. Press Ok.
A message will inform you that DllRegisterServer and
DllInstall in
shell32.dll succeeded.
Press OK to dismiss the message, and enjoy!
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Ishe

Please send that command again. I'd like to post it on the

It restores your shell32 dll file if it was corrupted. It
just registers
all shell32 DLL according to their factory settings.
I am glad it worked for you.
