I suggest, you go into google account settings, & carry out the instructions
on this page:
http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=61177
just make sure, you haven't given out that account to places like paypal, or
any other financial sites or any critical services.

Hi, everyone,
I am still trying to delete my gmail account but I'm not having much luck.
Would it be easier just to delete the entire account since I really don't
use it? Google's just my home page.
