I use Excel 2003 and have to press control spacebar to select a column, then alt O for format, to columns, then to auto widen or whatever it's called.
I think you have to select first before it will widen..

assuming you are using Excel 2003, you can widen the cells, using this procedure.

1 select the cells that you want to widen.
2 go to the format menu, find columns then enter, then arrow down until you hear autofit, and then press enter.
that should do it.
