I've read reviews on several of those off-the-shelf packages, just to get a
good sense of options. Of course, I couldn't tell anything about
accessibility, but since I have a turntable and receiver, I'd prefer not to
buy new hardware. Some of the packages seemed to automatically create CDs,
another feature I don't want. I may put some stuff on CD, although I imagine
I will primarily just use the files on my computer and MP3 player. I have
enjoyed getting a sense of what's out there, though.

There are also various, off the shelf combinations of hardware and
software out there, that involve things like turntables that specifically
connect directly to PC using USB connectors, and they're meant for pretty
much only then transferring the LP's into digital formats, but not sure
how usable their software is as such, and, since they can only be used for
one purpose, I've never bothered with them, whereas I've used audacity for
various other things in past, including recording tape books, a couple of
LP's, and some general audio editing, involving common actions like
clipping pieces out of tracks, applying effects to them, merging multiple
audio tracks/clips at stages, etc. etc., but anyway.
Good luck!

Thank you, Jacob, It looks like this will be a time-consuming but
manageable project. I'm looking forward to giving it a try.

Here's the audacity wiki page on transferring tapes or records to the
PC:

And here's the audacity usage with jaws page:

Subject: [Blind-Computing] accessible hardware & software for
digitizingvinyl albums
Hi All,
I have a big collection of vinyl records that I want to get onto my
computer. I'm using Jaws 13 & Vista. I've tried to do a little research
myself, but I don't want to dive in, only to get stuck because I've
chosen equipment or software that's not accessible with Jaws. From a
few articles on the internet that I just read, it sounds like I can use
my existing turntable & receiver, as long as I can find cables to
connect them to my computer. That could be tough since my receiver is
probably 40 years old. And then I'd need an audio editor. Audacity was
suggested in one article, and I believe it works with Jaws.
Do any of you know of a tutorial that's been done on digitizing vinyl
using a screenreader? Do you have any other tips or suggestions of good
things to read on the subject?
Thanks so much,
Shari
