Hi, Alex. Just because a game uses 3D audio, and you don't have a sound card and speakers which supports it won't prevent you from playing the game. However, you will have a less ritcher experience. Let me give you an example. If there is an enemy to your North-West. On a 5.1 3D setup you would hear it in your Left forward speaker. On a standard stereo setup you will hear it out of your left speaker. So you will be able to figure out if the enemy is left or right, but not be able to ttell if it is front or behind you. With a good 3D virtual environment you will be able to hear sounds front, back, left, and right. On a stereo setup all you can hope for is left and right. One thing that will help in a full game is having a targeting cue like a beep which is in SOD 1.2 which allows you to shoot the targets. As far as developers coming up with two versions that is honestly not cost effective. Simulating a virtual 3D environment is the way of the future. Those who want to stick with the trends need to invest in hardware that is compatible. You can have yourself a cheep 3D setup for just over $100 with a SB Live Value card and some Creative Labs 4.1 speakers.
