Hi, Sarah.
I am starting to get the hang of it. Basically, each character and
monster has a set number of strength, armor, etc... You start with that
as a base for your player's resistance or attack.
Then, you roll the dice which acts as a random generator to see how much
more damage or success you will do in that action.
A couple of days ago Lora gave a climbing example. Let's start with your
player's strength and climbing skill. Say that is a total of 4. that is
what I would start with.
then you use the d20 to add a random chance to the action. Let's say it
comes up at 10. However, the object you are climbing is 16. With your
skills and the random 10 combined you failed to climb the object at that
turn.
However, next time your roll and you roll a 14 on the d20. With your 4
you have a total of 18 so you succeeded in climbing over the object.
I am finding out start with memorising your character's skills, armor,
etc and add it up for the areas you will need. then all you need do is
add or subtract from the dice roll which is your randomiser.
