I also had that same problem when trying to play jim's games. It means
your version of direct ex doesn't support the game. Which version are
you using? You should at least have version 8.  Version 9 is available.

The version I am using is 1.2, however the problem is not the  program.
While messing around with some of the other games I own, I remembered
that I

have to turn off my hardware accelaration in the sound page of dx diag
to 
play the fight sequences in grizzly gulch and chillingham.
I went ahead and turned  that back on and the sounds work just fine now.
So 
it was my fault. I am sorry to  do that to you. Sorry for the trouble,
