Hi Richard,
I think the esentual difference between Trek and Star Wars is that in
Trek they attempt to address a future of mankind using science,
exploration, and try to stick to realistic but futuristic means where in
Star Wars the entire story is based on the characters, the idea of the
force, an almost religious belief about the force, and of course the
struggle between the Jedi Knights and the Sith. There is technology in
Star Wars, but it is not the storyline's basis.
If you look at some of the Star Trek shows such as Yesterday's
Enterprise you see a certain hypathetical science feel to the story's
basis. In that epasode the Enterprise NCC-1701-C got sent forward in
time through a temperal rift changing the future of the Enterprise
NCC-1701-D's future. The crew of the Enterprise NCC-1701-D solved the
problem by sending LT. Tosha Yar back in time where she was captured by
the Romulans, and that had lasting changes in the future as you see in
later epasodes. You eventually discover Yar had a daughter named
Commander Sela, and Sela generally causes as much problems for the
Enterprise as she can.
Anyway, I think one reason I like Trek so well is that exploration of
hypathetical cience, and being able to look at the what if. It also has
near endless storylines for the shows. It must as there is 3 seasons of
the classic, 7 of Next Gen, 7 from DS9, and 7 from Voyager, and 3 or 4
of Enterprise. That doesn't include the 10 movies, and books without number.
