Hi Richard,
Including sound in your games won't be that hard. You will need a copy 
of the MS DirectX 9 SDK which is 337 MB. I just downloaded the 2006 
update two days ago, and that was the file size.
Anyway, once you have that you need to add dsound.lib to your C++ 
project, and the dsound.h header to your file where the audio module is 
for your game.
If you want sometime I can send you some sample C++ code to look at 
which shows you how to load and play a wav file.
