You have to open a lead and insert  the meter, but I doubt the meter will 
handle 10 amps, check the book's spec for A.C. current.

Even if it'll measure current, it will never catch the start current,
the start current pulse is too quick and the meter is way way too slow,
unless it has a "peak reading" setting on the A.C. current range.

Have you the book on the furnace? it should give at least running 
current ratings.

Or check the fuse in the circuit that supplies the furnace.

1200 watts is way over a horsepower, I'd be amazed if any furnace blower
for a moderate home would come close to that drain.

Also, don't you want to keep the refrigerator going?

The confination could be a bit close to the mark for that generator.
