I haven't followed this thread closely so I don't know if this has been mentioned. Some of the Talkabout radios Motorola makes/sells can be fitted with an earphone with a boom microphone. It's also possible to set them to be voice activated. There are settings to control the level of ambient noise at which the voice activation kicks in. I don't know if this would work around something as noisey as a snowblower, but it might be worth trying. This in conjunction with Dan's ear covering suggestion might be just the ticket.
These radios have really come down in price by the way. I recently bought a set for like $49.95 from Amazon.
