Your ceiling fan is running from 120hz alternating current as is anything running off your house current. Anything with a motor or transformer will generate this hum, acoustically, so any surface in contact with the motor or transformer becomes a soundingboard. A ceiling is one humongoloid soundingboard. Some sort of shockmounts are needed to isolate the appliance from its soundingboard.
