Hi All, Just to add to this thread...
Toronto Hydro and Ontario Power Generation, the two electric companies here in Toronto, Ontario, are introducing, what they call smart meters into residential and commercial homes and apartments. These are supposedly smart in that they are hardwired into their telephone line, and call into the electric company several times per day to give the meter reading. This, in turn, allows for the home owner to save tons of money because, up until now, some people were taking the governments and electric company's advice and doing high wattage activities, such as dishwashing and laundry at night, but unless that person called in their meter reading before and after those chores, they couldn't take advantage of the lower electricity rates in the middle of the night or at off-peak hours. They are now introducing these meters to make up for this issue, and giving people more incentive to reduce power consumption. I guess this is as close as we can expect to get in the near future to talking meters.
