Jim, I got several of those sound devices from Home Depot about four years ago, and was delighted when the mice seemed to vanish within a couple of days. Then I was disappointed when the mice came back within a few weeks, even though the sound devices were still in place. I guessed that the little buggers just learned to put up with the noise. I think that was the same year that I tried leaving lots of moth balls wherever the mice liked to go. Stunk up the whole house but didn't phase the mice.
That story about the sound devices reminds me of the time that I went to an outdoor shooting range. The area between the shooting platform and the targets was thick with birds and rabbits. They had apparently just learned to accept the constant blasting of guns and the bullets whizzing over head, and they didn't flinch at all.
