Do you know what wiring is in the box?

Often there is three conductor cable there, black white and red. If so there 
should be 110 between the red and the white and 110 between the black and 
the white, 220 between the red and the black.

This assumes correct code and all that Rae was talking about.

If this is so then you take a standard 110 receptacle and split the bridge 
between the two sockets on the live bronze screw side of the receptacle, 
attach the red to one terminal and the black to the other and the white to 
the other neutral side of the receptacle, ground it in the usual way and you 
now have two circuits in the same box, each 110 volts and what ever amperage 
the circuit supports.

I expect this is what you will find, except for specific and specialized 
installations most will have that arrangement. Stoves and dryers for example 
have both 220 volt requirements and 110 volt requirements for things like 
timers, lights and auxiliary outlets, air conditioners have 110 volt fans.
