Hi Robert, There is probably a specific tool for the job but all I have ever used is a vice grip or even a bar held between those little pegs to remove the plug. Keep a bucket under the trap you will likely get about a cup of disgusting effluent come out of there.
There should be a little rubber washer, try not to lose it, it makes a difference. Hope this helps.
