Phil, Nicad and NIMH batteries ned approximately the same type of charging, as in constant current till it is nearly charged then reduced current till it's full. Lithium batteries, I think, need a constant voltage charge but I've forgotten how they determine the charge state.
The thing to remember is that you must not charge led acid, or jelled electrolyte batteries with any charger except one meant for that type of cell. I don't know of anything better than NIMH except Lithium where it is applicable. Basically use the correct charger for any particular pack or battery, you'll get better life and performance.
