Jennifer,

Probably not much.

First thing is to get rid of all standing water to remove breeding grounds.
This includes any abandon tires which collect water which is about impossible
to get rid of. If people are dumping stuff behind you that is a distinct
possibility. There may be other sources like swampy conditions and even much of
the vegetation can produce enough moisture for them to breed.

You can keep your area dry but they have wings to carry them from adjacent
locations.

There are propane devices which actually do work to attract and trap mosquitos,
they produce a plomb of moist warm carbon-dioxide much as does a large animal
like a cow or horse with a vacuum device and mesh bag, I understand that they
can consume thousands over a 24 hour period however unless your neighbours are
using them too the neighbourhood will remain infested. There is some
satisfaction in knowing that you are removing numerous mommies from adding to
future population though.

While a number of things like citronella are claimed to discourage mosquitos,
so far as I know, there have been no scientific proofs although this does not
discourage a multi billion dollar industry and people have beliefs as strongly
held as religion. I had a couple of huge citronella plants here for several
years and I can assure you that sitting with the potted plant in my lap did
nothing to discourage the nasty beggars from biting me.

I haven't used bug lamps directly, have been around many though, while they
seem to electrocute many bugs some of which may well be mosquitos, my feeling
is that they stop for a snack on me on their way to the lamp.

Ok, I have found a house that might work. it is not the best location, nor
the best house, but it is a good compromise between the two. We are still
looking around though. The think I noticed is that the yard, especially in the
back, is swarming with mosquitoes and other bugs. There is a wooded area on the
other side of the back fence and I think the source may lye back there. Will
there be anything I will be able to do about the mosquitoes if I buy the house?
