In one of the recent woodworking magazines there was an article about cutting down finishing time by making supports for the work piece. The author suggested taking some strips of wood and putting brad nails to hold the piece so both sides could be finished. Sure wish that I would have sent my tip in years ago. I have been doing something similar for many years and think my idea is a little better because you do not have to store a stick with a lot of nails protruding. I have some approximate 2.5 inch squares of 1/2 inch plywood. near the center of these blocks I drilled a small hole. Through the holes I insert a 1 and 1/2 inch nail. Then I use four of these supports to hold the work piece. We first put the finish on the under side then rest the piece on the nail points and finish the rest. When storing I just put the nails and blocks away. No chance of getting a nail into your hand when looking for the supports.
