Yes, you can connect your cable or DSL modem to a router. You should  
have in addition to four ports for computers, one port which is going  
to be called either a WAN or LAN port, unless your router is actually  
a 3 port router with a LAN/WAN port.
You can get the Linksys WRT54G for about $50 or less. I'm pretty sure  
they still sell that model and you can't go wrong with Linksys routers.
