If you can make air come out with a screwdriver and not with the stem, the stem 
isn't getting far enough into the chuck.  You'll have to put some extra 
pressure on the chuck with your thumb and wiggle it around to get that stem 
inside the chuck,.  

If you have access to another air chuck I'd try it.  I've had a hand full I've 
thrown out over the years out of frustration.  Right now in my tool box I have 
3 chucks and those are just the ones that have survived.  I don't waste a lot 
of time trying to get one to work.
