Bob, Lets put it this way, we know it takes at least 110 to run the unititself, but without the thermostat sending a signal to the unit, it's not going to turn on. This is what other listers are talking about with there talking thermostats. I've been using a talking thermostat for 8 or 9 years, and haven't had any problems because when it's says the batteries are getting low, I change them.
