Good day Cheryl, The first thing I would say is that a 16 inch wide sidewalk will not be satisfactory. You will want something a lot wider than that, probably 36 inches or at least 24..
Pavers are a very nice solution but can be costly. There are nice alternatives though. You might consider digging out the path three or four inches is probably all you would need in your climate and install some edging. The plastic edging or metal edging often used as a barrier to separate lawns from gardens would work fine. You want to form a sharp edge which will help separate the path from the surrounding vegetation. I don't know about conditions where you live but I think it would be worth while to line the bottom of the dug out area with landscape fabric. You could then fill with pea gravel or coloured pebbles. In many locations people even use shredded bark but I would guess in your environment that would soon become insect food. Gardening centres might be helpful, perhaps there are barks or other wood chip materials which are resistant in your area. These methods will keep you out of the mud for a very long time and may be cheaper and still esthetically acceptable. Much depends on cost and availability locally. This will not be a good solution for say wheelchair access. Aloha from Sheryl, I want to construct a sidewalk that goes around my house part of the way. I want to stay with a period look 1920. I've priced pavors at several stores including the local hardwear store and big box stores. There is not a very good selection of any kind. I've thought of concrete, interlocking pavors at $1.50 each but probably do not know what options are available. The walkway will start at the bottom of my deck stairs make a gentle circle toward the front of the house pass the front steps making a line to the rental studio to keep from having to walk in the mud. I am thinking of around sixteen inches wide. Would appreciate any thoughts and ideas. I roughly figured I would need about 800 pavors for the project more than I want to spend. Be careful if you live where the weather is very cold and snowy. I saw on the news and frankly it looks awful. Stay safe. Aloha Sheryl [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
