I am assuming that removing the handle, you cannot turn the shaft of the 
latching mechanism.  Assuming you can remove the handle, can you insert a screw 
driver into the mechanism and move it at all? I would probably try knocking the 
latching mechanism out, but I think removing the hinge pins is going to be the 
easier solution as was suggested.
