Router bits can be sharpened, you just want to do some research before you let just anyone sharpen them. It takes a bit more than a bench grinder...
One thing to keep in mind. Bits collect pitch and residue and that makes them appear dull. If the bits have bearings I would recommend taking the bearing off first and then a coffee can of mineral spirits will go a long way toward removing gunk. You can pick up a stiff nylon or brass brush in most any hardware store and that will help scrub if you need to. ----- Original Message ----- From: Alan & Terrie Robbins To: Blindhandyman Sent: Friday, March 26, 2010 6:21 PM Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Router bit life Since using routers in my remodeled workshop is fairly new to me, I have a question. Can router bits be sharpened as can drill bits or does one simply discard them when dull, etc. Approximately what type usable life do they have? I realize part of the answer to this depends on how much one uses it. For example, today I put an edge on 3 sides of 4 1 by 12's I had made some shelves out of. Using this as an example, any idea how many shelves I could do like this before the bit needed to be replaced? thanks Al [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
