Are you sure these are 90º elbows? That would total to 180º and would have 
the effect of routing any water exactly back where it came from.

I think if you bring the downspout directly down from the gutter you will be 
creating another problem in that that will not be a very robust assembly. 
The downspout was brought to that support post just for that reason --  
support.  I'm certain the downspout is secured to that post via some 
strapping because those fasteners holding the downspout to the gutter will 
really not be sufficient in stormy weather.  One thing I did to minimize 
clogging in these sort of bends was to make sure that I used the shortest 
screws possible.  These screws need to be at least long enough to "catch" 
the inside stock (the downspout/elbow joints) securely, but they need not 
extend into the "tunnel" where they can impede the passing of debris.

Another thought is that, if you have aluminum or steel gutter material, is 
to use pop rivets.  But I wouldn't recommend that technique on plastic or 
fiberglass material; I did that and it didn't do well.
