I think the thermostat was indeed broken before removal of the expansion tank so your tip to be careful upon re-installation is excellent. Now that I have inspected the new replacement thermostat it appears that I have not fished all of the broken pieces out of the lower elbow. This is promising as it appears I will not need to remove the transmission cooler from the bracket to install the new 'stat. I just hope the weather stays reasonable...it is always fun laying in a puddle of coolant in freezing temperatures. Matt Weimer Hoosier Chapter ------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 Jan 2008 From: Kazuto Okayasu <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: E46 coolant expansion tank question I can't be of complete help here, but I replaced the expansion tank on my MT 01 325 last week, so I think I have some idea of what's going on here. I believe the answer here is yes. Judging by the way it appears the ATF heat exchanger mounts, and the text in the Bentley, the heat exchanger can be disconnected from the bracket without breaking the ATF lines. It then appears on AT cars that the lower heater hose elbow is a separate part from the bracket (this is part of the bracket on MT cars). Remove the fan shroud (it sits over the top of the bracket over the top lip of the radiator), one T25 screw partway down the side of the radiator, and the bracket pulls straight up. Sorry, I can't answer #1, though my mechanic warned me that this thermostat is often destroyed during reinstallation of the expansion tank. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Never miss a thing. Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Kazuto, Thanks ... good to know that there are plenty of self-diag in the airbag system. Yeah, I have the round Sport Package terring wheel airbag. I am going to talk to the service department and see what they say ... thanks again. -A ----------------------------- Date: Wed, 09 Jan 2008 09:15:40 -0800 From: Kazuto Okayasu <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "'uucdigest'" <bmwuucdigest@uucdigest.com> Subject: Re: FW: E46 Steering Wheel Clicking Problem ... Taking the bits apart to get to the clock spring area in a E46 is fairly straightforward, though. And as long as the battery is disconnected and you don't do anything stupid, you won't have any problems with the airbag going off. There is a bit of a trick to getting the airbag itself out if it's one of the round Sport Package ones, though. In terms of being worried about it not going off after you button it back up, there's enough self-diagnostics in the system that it'll tell you if you forgot to hook something back up. -- Alex Chan E-mail : [EMAIL PROTECTED] ------------------------------ End of [bmwuucdigest] digest(6 messages) **********
