That's pretty strange. Although when I'm watching the activity of the profile_screen_form (in Safarai) it doesn't seem to be trying anything weird. I'm get the same error in firefox, so maybe firebug will help.
The only other thing I can think of is that we're using .htaccess to control who can get into our ops webpage, without any control in the auth_ops() method in profile.inc.
