Thank you Hans for all the help debugging. I too discovered the utf8_encoding problem and got some good results by making that change. But I came down with a dreadful case of the flu before I could post that fix. When I get a little time back on my feet again, I'll pour through your suggestions and try implementing them. It was pretty exciting to see real chinese characters in my address bar...
