Well I had a busy evening now. Extracted the flash EEPROM from the board and actually managed to read its 2MB of content. From what I can see there I guess the flash chip is well in order. I read it multiple times and compared the outputs, and once all contacts were good, the files did not have a single bit of difference. The last 640kB of the binary dump, beginning at address 0x160000, are identical to the boom_v57.bin firmware file that I found on my Squeezebox Server in C:\Program Files (x86)\Squeezebox\Server\Firmware. So the box is on the latest FW which is good to know. I also found the MAC address that is printed on the bottom-side label at address 0xfc0a. And, of course, the string "MAC not set!" at address 0x1014f7 :p. There are tons of other strings in many languages as well but they don't help much.
As the heatgun was on already, I also tried to fix possible soldering issues beneath the CPU by giving it 330°C from the topside for a few minutes. Eventually soldered the flash memory back in and now I'm back at the beginning. The issue remains  >From the seller I have the information that the box actually died in steps. It would first have dropouts that would sound like a codec error, I assume that would be some digital noise. This symptom would occur some seconds into playback and the behavior up to that point was normal. Some weeks later, with the box not being used much, it failed with all the issues described. Actually reballing the CPU from scratch is way beyond my possibilities. Maybe replacing the SDRAM chip might help. I imagine it serves as a buffer for audio data, among other duties. If it is faulty, that could explain the audio garbage the previous owner described. Maybe also the display issue about the horizontal lines and the strange behavior on MAC address input. Well, that replacement is easy in comparison to the flash EEPROM. I'll first have to buy a replacement though which will take a while. Will let you know about my progress... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ JoeMuc2009's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=23131 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=104987
